The deliveries were negotiated between the Algerian public company Sonatrach and the Czech energy group CEZ
The Czech Republic has started importing gas from Algeria in order to free itself from supplies from Russia, the energy group said on October 31. THROUGH.
Supplies through gas pipelines in Tunisia and Italy will cover around 2% of Czech gas consumption, which corresponds to the needs of 100,000 households, said Roman Gazdikspokesperson for CEZ, in a press release.
He added that the deliveries negotiated with the Algerian public company Sonatrach began in October. “We have taken a new step in strengthening our energy security”said Daniel Benesgeneral director of CEZ.
The Czech Republic, a member of the EU and NATO with its 10.9 million inhabitants, has been trying to definitively get rid of its dependence on Russian oil and gas since the start of the conflict with the Ukraine in February 2022.
92% of Czech gas imports pass through Germany. This mainly concerns Norwegian gas, as well as gas imported via a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal located in the Netherlands.
Around 8% of deliveries come from neighboring Slovakia, and according to experts, this is partly Russian gas.
Czechs consumed 6.76 billion cubic meters of gas in 2023, a decrease of 10.4% compared to 2022, due to savings strongly encouraged by the government.
