In a historic decision at the 39th World Congress of the Federation Internationale de (FIVB), held in Porto, Portugal, Fabio Azevedo was unanimously elected as the new president on Saturday. This watershed moment marks the start of a new era for volleyball’s global governing body.

Azevedo takes over from Dr. Ary S. Graca F, who has admirably led the FIVB since 2012. The new president-elect is set to lead the organization over the next eight years, culminating in 2032, a period that promises to be rich in growth and innovation.

Upon announcing his election, Azevedo expressed his gratitude and commitment, saying: “I am honored, humbled and grateful to be elected to serve the World Volleyball Movement for the next eight years. For the past 12 years , volleyball has seen remarkable growth, development and modernization on a global scale, and we have the opportunity to build on a very strong foundation.” Its vision for the future emphasizes collaboration, encapsulated in the Strategic Vision 2024-2032, centered on the slogan ‘Together as one’. The fundamental principles emphasize professionalism, integration, empowerment and mass participation.

To support Azevedo in his new role, Hugh McCutcheon was appointed general secretary. McCutcheon, a respected figure in the volleyball community with extensive experience as a player, coach and sports administrator, expressed his excitement regarding this new appointment: “I am truly honored and excited to take on this new role within the FIVB “This moment feels both surreal and deeply rewarding, and I’m grateful to be part of a journey that will help shape the sport’s next chapter.” Her commitment to volleyball promises to contribute significantly to its continued development.
