24 hours after triggering the fire alert in this building on rue Ambroise Paré, very close to the cathedral and the covered market of Metz, around fifty firefighters are still fighting this disaster. Fifteen machines are on site. The situation is “stable” indicates the departmental fire and rescue service, but “not under control”. Reconnaissance operations are carried out, thermal camera in hand. Hot spots in the maze of old cellars, dating from the Middle Ages, light up and then go out. The challenge for firefighters is therefore to cool these hot spots in order to avoid any further conflagration. This is what happened yesterday at midday. Very hot smoke rose and set fire to the top floor of this old four-story building.
The Hisler bookstore closed
All residents were evacuated and brought to safety very early yesterday morning. The Metz town hall specifies that no rehousing was requested, since the residents were welcomed by relatives or covered by their insurance.
The Hisler bookstore will not open this morning. Firefighters covered most of the belongings, computers and books to prevent them from being damaged by the water used to extinguish the smoke.
