Tuesday, November 12, students from the two CM2 classes of the Diderot school group, in Joinville, participated in an interactive flood awareness conference, led by Aurélie Guy, speaker from Sentiers de la Belette. This day took place as part of the 2024 edition of the National Resilience Days (JNR) to which this intervention is part, a national initiative supported by the government, which wishes to strengthen the culture of prevention and safety among young people and throughout society.

For three hours per class, the facilitator addressed the different types of risks linked to flooding, based on the double educational booklet “Une drop de trop”, designed by the Departmental Directorate of Territories (DDT) of Haut-Rhin for the and validated by the academic inspection. Thanks to the teachers, Ms. Douard, Ms. Jacquier and Fleury, who welcomed the speaker, the 38 students were able, during this day of interactive workshops, to understand climate issues and the risks of natural disasters. By actively participating in practical experiments on runoff, infiltration and flooding according to different types of soil, they were able to concretely observe the impacts of these phenomena. They also discussed with the facilitator the safeguard and alert measures to adopt in the event of flooding. These exercises, adapted to their level, helped develop essential safety reflexes in children, thus strengthening their capacity for resilience in the face of major risks.

Beyond this initiation, the teachers expressed their satisfaction with the effectiveness of the intervention: “The students had a rare opportunity to discover phenomena that they would not have been able to understand solely through books. Seeing, touching and asking questions of the facilitator gave them a concrete understanding of what flooding represents,” they said.
