The brutal murder of a septuagenarian in the small town of Gouarec (Côtes-d’Armor) shakes the region. The rapid investigation, which led to the identification and incarceration of a suspect, revealed a tragic tangle of drugs and violence. This case raises questions about the social consequences of drug addiction and drug trafficking, even though some of the press does not hesitate to almost hail the suspect’s dealer as having denounced him to the authorities (after having provided him with drug several times?)

A gruesome murder in a rural setting

On November 13, 2024, the lifeless body of a 70-year-old man was found in Gouarec, a usually peaceful town. The victim, known and appreciated locally, had multiple fractures and injuries inflicted by a sharp object. The main suspect, Alvin Saillard, aged 30 and with a long criminal record, was quickly arrested. During his interrogation, he spoke of a “stroke of madness” triggered by his drug use.

Initial investigations reveal that the alleged murderer had been using cannabis on a daily basis, as well as cocaine and crack for several months. His profile, marked by 24 convictions since 2011 for violence and drug trafficking, highlights a trajectory marked by delinquency and addiction. Saillard had recently been living with his father in Gouarec after being released from prison.

The GIGN (National Gendarmerie Intervention Group) therefore intervened at his home. After being arrested, he admitted to having “confused” with the 70-year-old man, Tuesday November 12 at the end of the afternoon, and having dealt him a blow which caused him to fall to the ground. He then moved the victim to the back of the parking lot, thinking she was still alive. The autopsy carried out on Thursday showed that the man had several fractures, injuries to his face and thorax, as well as wounds to his hands, made with a sharp object. The deceased also had a burn on his wrist.

An investigation “resolved thanks to a dealer” according to Libération

The investigation took a special turn when a dealer in the area reported the discovery of the body to the authorities. This man, arrested on the day of the incident in possession of nearly 25 kilos of drugs, declared that he preferred to denounce the murder for fear of the dangerousness of the alleged assassin. This detail, highlighted in certain media such as Libération or Bleu, which evokes an investigation resolved thanks to the dealer, diverts attention from the deep roots of this tragedy: the central role of drugs and their consumption.

Psychoactive substances not only affect the health of users, but also create a breeding ground for violence. The widespread use of drugs in rural areas, often perceived as spared from these problems, highlights the urgency of a global response.

The drug dealer in this case denounced his friend because he considered him dangerous. But he also admitted to selling drugs in large quantities via the Telegram application and the police found in his home nearly 24 kg of cannabis resin, nearly 1.5 kg of cannabis herb , 137 grams of cocaine and 13 ecstasy pills. This public poisoner, the new “Sherlock Holmes” for a certain press, was sentenced in court upon prior admission of guilt to two years in prison, six of which were suspended, and immediately imprisoned.

The murder suspect was indicted for murder and placed in pre-trial detention.

The role of drugs in a spiral of violence

This tragedy is the latest example of the dangers of drugs in our society. The daily consumption of illicit substances by Alvin Saillard appears to have been a triggering factor in this murderous act. These products, beyond their effects on health, modify behavior, exacerbate tensions and sometimes lead to irreparable acts.

While some media focus on the help provided by the dealer in resolving the investigation, even though this dealer was supplying drugs to the main suspect, it is crucial not to minimize the underlying problem. Drugs, whether used or sold, played a central role in this tragedy. The increasing normalization of these products, even in public discourse, contributes to a climate where their dangers are underestimated.

Gouarec’s murder is not only a shocking news story, but a brutal reminder of the social and human consequences of drug addiction and drug trafficking. This is a problem that extends beyond the borders of large cities and into rural areas, disrupting entire communities.

The authorities, but also citizens, must think about firm responses to this scourge. Whether it involves strengthening controls, intensifying prevention campaigns or rethinking sanctions for traffickers and consumers, each actor has a role to play. This tragedy must serve as a warning to remind us that drugs, far from being harmless, destroy lives and communities.
