During an interview with Le Soir, Georges-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR, spoke about tax proposals and economic issues. His reaction to the “Coucke tax”, a measure targeting the wealthy proposed by the Flemish left, particularly attracted attention.
Bouchez strongly defended entrepreneur Marc Coucke while firmly criticizing the tax proposal: “Can I tell you something?… Marc Coucke, he has done 100 times more for the country than 90% of politicians.”
“What are these guys doing? Asking questions to ministers all day without any consequences… Marc Coucke, he runs a professional football club, dozens of hotels, he invests in start-ups, he has created thousands of jobs… “
For Bouchez, a tax on wealth would jeopardize the desire to succeed: “You know, we can have a country where success is prohibited, we will all be poor, all equal…”
“Maybe one day, it’s Frank Vandenbroucke who will take over Sporting
The president of the MR also quoted Winston Churchill to illustrate his point of view: “In capitalism, people have lots of cars, in the USSR, they have lots of parking lots… We can be a parking society. I don’t want to not a society where there is no more pleasure, spectacle, success…”
He concluded on a note of humor: “Maybe one day, it’s Frank Vandenbroucke who will take over Sporting Anderlecht and bring them to the European Cup, but in the meantime…”
