The All-Star Game as we knew it, namely a classic match between All-Stars, is it dead? It’s possible, because ESPN announces that the competition committee, made up of owners, managers, players and coaches, discussed this Friday a new formula for the All-Star Weekend, with a four-team tournament!
Instead of seeing the 24 All-Stars split into two teams of 12 players to compete in a classic match, they would be divided into three teams of eight, with a fourth team winning the Rising Stars Challenge added to the table. Enough to propose a Final Four, with two semi-finals then a final.
For the moment, the new formula has not yet been validated, but the idea is gaining ground, notably under the leadership of Stephen Curry, consulted by the NBA while the 2025 All-Star Game is being held in San Francisco .
The Stephen vs Sabrina duel returns
On the NBA side, we are therefore seeking to relaunch an event which has turned into a farce for several years, the fault of players who completely left aside the spirit of competition during the All-Star Game, transforming it into a gigantic dunk and 3-point contest, much to the regret of Adam Silver who no longer knows what to do…
“If I hadn’t seen what happened this year, I think we would have been ready to change the formula, to make it a match between the United States and the rest of the world. But I wonder if this generation of players… And the franchises are complicit too, because no one wants them to play hard in the All-Star Game. Nobody wants to get injured and they see it as a break in the middle of the season.” he explained a few months ago.
Determined to “do more fun things”the “commissioner” should also be able to highlight an improved version of the duel between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu, by adding Caitlin Clark and Klay Thompson.
