A resident of Argentan (Orne) was convicted, Tuesday November 12, 2024to three months in prison suspended by the Argentan court for violence against a spouse. Aged 29, the man was found guilty of threatened his ex-partner with a knife in front of their childrena “joke” according to him.
Death threats and alcohol consumption
The July 2, 2024the Argentan police was requested by a woman threatened with death by her ex-husband. When they arrived, they were greeted by the applicant’s daughter, while the mother arrived a few minutes later. She explained that her ex-partner told her he would kill her if she did not come home.
The ex-partner described a man incapable of accepting separation, whose alcohol and cannabis consumption could provoke outbursts of anger. A few days before, he had threatened with a knife at friends’ housewhich several witnesses confirmed.
During his hearing, the accused denied any physical violence, claiming that his threats were made out of jealousy and as a joke. He added that he did not accept divorce and hoped for reconciliation with his ex-wife, despite her refusal.

Although his criminal record has no convictions, the public prosecutor nevertheless points out to him that he was arrested on November 2, 2024 for theft, a case which will be judged early next year.

“As a joke, we can see that my client died of laughter. Imagine her two children aged 5 and 11 who were present and saw their mother being threatened with a knife,” quips the lawyer for the civil party.
The public prosecutor recalled the seriousness of the facts and the previous arrests of the accused, requesting a three-month suspended prison sentence, an awareness course on domestic violence to be completed within six months, or two months in prison in the event of non-execution. A ban on contact and appearing at the home of the civil party for a period of two years was also requested, with provisional execution.
Three months suspended prison sentence
The court followed the prosecutor’s requisitions, sentencing the man to three months suspended prison sentence and ordering the payment of €500 to his ex-spouse as compensation. The decision has been reserved and will be rendered onDecember 3, 2024.
