Record enrollment at the University of Geneva (UNIGE). This school year, 3,068 new bachelor's students and more than 1,100 new master's students joined the alma mater last September, an increase of 13.3% and 19.4% respectively compared to 2023.
This peak in numbers would be linked to a change in the habits of the student body after the pandemic, during which mobility possibilities were reduced. Added to this is an administrative factor: the introduction in autumn 2023 of an online registration system. “The attractiveness of master's courses, where the increase is most spectacular, probably also plays a role,” confides the institution in the Journal de l'UNIGE.
The indicators therefore suggest a significant increase in overall numbers in the coming years. The establishment is preparing for this with the construction of a new building which will see the light of day in 2028 in the Vernets district. On the right bank, the Center for Physical and Mathematical Sciences will be built by 2032. Student housing capacities should also be increased.
In total, UNIGE now welcomes 17,886 students compared to 17,681 during the 2023-2024 academic year. In the end, the increase is therefore modest, 1.2%. However, this is explained by the exceptional number of outgoing students at the end of the previous year.
