It's a little more than just a phone call. Citing German government sources, theAgence France Presse and the agency Bloomberg indicated this Friday, November 15, 2024 that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone during the day.
As the agency notes Reuterswhich confirms the information, the last direct exchange between the two men dated from December 2022. This last call therefore came 10 months after the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
A symbolic call
No details regarding the content of the exchange between the two men have yet emerged. Nevertheless, the mere holding of this call is of significant importance.
This constitutes, in fact, a new signal suggesting that the moment when the belligerents and their partners will negotiate to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine is closer than it has been in recent months. Or, at least, that it is now imaginable.
