Cavalaire: The Fires of Midsummer

The Sea, Provence and Traditions Association and the Tourist Office invite Cavalair residents and visitors to gather to celebrate the summer solstice on St. John’s Day, the Monday June 24 and to celebrate the fishermen Sunday June 30.
Since its creation, these two Provençal festivals have continued to increase their popularity. It is true that traditional events are very appreciated by the many visitors wishing to know the customs of our coastline, but above all by the people of Provence themselves, proud of their roots and ancestral values.

The Midsummer Fires Monday June 24, 2024
A little throwback…
The traditional fires of St Jean are anchored in our Provençal heritage.
On the evening of June 24, an ancestral custom is to light a large bonfire at nightfall, bringing together all the inhabitants of a town or village around its light. Associated with Saint John the Baptist, who is celebrated on June 24, this custom has its roots in an even older tradition, that of celebrating the summer solstice. The fire, visible from afar, brings the community together and is already, as such, a joyful and superb spectacle. The tradition is to dance around the fire, and popular balls are organized on this occasion.
