Roxie, the baby female red panda at Edinburgh Zoo, died from stress caused by fireworks this week, Scottish park management announced. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said she choked on her own vomit due to stress, the BBC reports. Roxie’s mother, Ginger, also died unexpectedly five days earlier. Roxie was born in July, bringing the number of red pandas in captivity at Edinburgh Zoo to four, with a fifth arriving in Scotland in October.
“Scary noises”
Clashes took place in Edinburgh: mortars were thrown at the police and two fire stations in the city were attacked. New measures banning the use of fireworks came into force in four areas of the city between 1is and November 10, without the area around the zoo being included. Ben Supple, deputy chief executive of the RZSS, said baby Roxie had taken refuge in her den, but the “ scary noises » seem to have been too strong for her.
A petition
The RZSS has now called for tougher restrictions on fireworks, saying they frighten pets, livestock and zoo animals, with “ devastating consequences “. The company backed a petition which was signed by more than a million people and delivered to Downing Street.
