Vancouver Canucks forward Dakota Joshua will play his first game of the season Thursday night, having had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor two months ago.
At the end of the summer, the hockey player was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

“It was certainly a scary time. But I’m very grateful and just happy to still be in this position and to be able to play,” said the 28-year-old athlete after his team’s morning training.
“I think mentally it will take care of itself. Getting back on the ice is really the only way to know.”
Joshua played his last game during the Canucks’ playoff run in spring 2024. Against the New York Islanders, he will play on the fourth line.
“He’s a big guy who has great hands. Obviously he played really well for this organization, especially last year, so we’re excited to have him back. He’s been through a lot and I love the way he handled it. We’re just happy for him,” said head coach Rick Tocchet.
Joshua had his best career season in the National League in 2023-24. The American hit the target 18 times and provided 14 assists for 32 points in 63 games during the regular season. He also collected eight points in 13 playoff games.
“I want to come back and make sure I’m at the top from the start,” Joshua said. I want to be ready to help the team win. I expect to be good. I don’t expect a grace period. I’ve been working hard, so I expect, like I said, to go out there and make an impact as soon as possible.”
“It’s not ideal to start a few weeks into the season, but that’s where we are.”
