An explosion kills a 9-year-old child in Croatia: his father, “a Czech citizen”, was arrested

A Czech national was arrested in Croatia after entering a prohibited military zone and picking up an explosive device which later detonated, killing his 9-year-old son and wounding three, Croatian police said Friday.

The explosion, which occurred on Wednesday near the town of Zadar in central Croatia, killed the boy and injured three adults, all of whom were in the same car.

Police said the child killed was the suspect’s son. All the victims were Czech citizens.

The suspect, aged 46, who was visiting Croatia with family and friends, “did not respect the signs in Croatian and English which clearly indicated the presence of a dangerous zone on which a military training ground was located“, details the police press release.

The suspect is nevertheless “entered the restricted area with a child, allowing him to pick up an explosive device and take it with him, which he then personally placed in his car“.

Shortly after, the vehicle broke down on a nearby road and the child removed the explosive device from the vehicle when it exploded, instantly killing the little boy and injuring three adults.

After the suspect was questioned by police, a criminal complaint was filed for committing a serious crime against general security, the Zadar County Prosecutor’s Office said, adding that the suspect was released.

The criminal complaint will be forwarded to the Czech Republic because all participants” involved are Czech citizens, added the prosecution.

The suspect is accused of having committed “serious criminal act threatening public safety” and of “endangering the lives of others and property“added the police.

Police said an investigation was underway and a forensic examination was expected to be used to determine the type of explosive device that caused the incident.

Czech authorities confirmed the incident and the arrest.

I can confirm that a Czech citizen has been arrested in connection with Wednesday’s explosion in the Zadar region” Daniel Drake, spokesperson for the Czech Foreign Ministry, told AFP.

Given the fact that a child died in the incident, we will not communicate“, he added.

Almost 800,000 Czech tourists visited Croatia last year.
