Brazil’s Supreme Court was evacuated after two explosions occurred outside the building on Wednesday evening, killing one person, police said.
These explosions come five days before the opening of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. Chinese President Xi Jinping will then make a state visit to Brasilia, the Brazilian capital.
The first explosion occurred in a parking lot adjacent to the building. Supreme Court judges, who had just finished a plenary session, were safely evacuated, the court said in a statement.
The second explosion occurred in a park across the street from the building. The body of a man, killed in the explosion, was found there.
A police officer told local television that an explosive device had been found on the man.
Federal police said they had deployed a bomb squad to the park to investigate the explosions. Brazil’s attorney general denounced an “attack” on social networks.
The explosions were heard at the famous Three Powers Square, located between the National Congress building, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva left the presidential palace shortly before the explosions.
