In Europe, hydrocarbon needs are still very high, particularly since Brussels decided to cut ties with Moscow. Russia, which was one of the main suppliers of gas to the Old Continent, today occupies a marginal place compared to other nations, which have revealed themselves.
This is particularly the case of Algeria which, in a few months, has established itself as one of the main suppliers, if not the main supplier of gas to Spain. In October 2024 alone, this Maghreb country accounted for 53% of total gas imports, well ahead of Russia (16.1%) and the United States (8%), its two main competitors.
Algeria, leading gas exporter to Spain
Today, it seems certain that Algeria contributes, in a more than significant way, to Spain’s energy security. In total, 13,574 GWh (Gigawatt-hours) were sent to Spain, including 10,296 GWh in the form of “conventional” gas, via the Medgaz pipeline. The rest (3,458 GWh) in the form of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas).
Reported at the beginning of the year (between January and September), Algeria would have, according to data revealed by Enagas, exported 37.9% of the natural gas imported by Spain. Again, this is more than its main competitors, Russia (21.3% of gas imports into Spain) and the United States (17.8% of gas imports into Spain). Algiers thus occupies a central place.
Two partner countries, which collaborate
In addition to the international geopolitical situation, the geographical proximity of the two countries is one of the main factors that can explain this particularly strong partnership between the two nations. A strategic situation which thus allows an exchange of good practices between these two partners, whose relations have not always been good.
