The Israeli ambassador to France, Joshua Zarak, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, November 12, following the diplomatic incident that occurred last Thursday in a French diplomatic hold in Jerusalem, according to information reported this Monday by French media .
Joshua Zarak will have to “provide explanations and discuss possible consequences” of last Thursday’s diplomatic incident, said Le Figaro, citing the Quai d’Orsay.
Last Thursday, two French gendarmes assigned to diplomatic security were arrested by the Israeli police on the French Eléona site in Jerusalem, on the sidelines of the visit to Israel by Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
While Israeli police officers showed up armed at the diplomatic site in violation of international law, the gendarmes who opposed their presence were taken to the police station before finally being released.
The Quai d’Orsay immediately “condemned” the incident and announced the summons of the Israeli ambassador to France in the coming days without giving a precise date.
Jean-Noël Barrot denounced an “unacceptable situation” after refusing to enter the Eléona, due to the presence of armed Israeli security forces there.
“The entry into force of Israeli security constitutes an unprecedented decision, which makes it so serious,” said a diplomatic source, cited by BFMTV.
