-40% of the population of Quebec would now support the tram project according to a SOM survey-The Sun-FM93 published last week.
Mayor Marchand was not worried about this drop in support for the tramway. “It’s not the end of the world,” he commented. He also expects that social acceptability will still be an issue during the work phase.
The tram megaproject also recently gave rise to a verbal clash between Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and the mayor, Bruno Marchand.
Mr. Marchand argued that it would be a mistake to rquestion major infrastructure projects with each change of government.
If Quebec does not get its fair share of federal investments, this would represent a injustice, since its citizens participated in the financing of major public transportation projects in Montreal and elsewhere in Canada, he argued.
According to the mayor, it is only after the tram is put into service that it will be recognized and accepted.
