Health professionals who work in hospital palliative care departments come very close to death. In a podcast, palliative care nurse Julie McFadden revealed what she considers to be the “worst“diseases to die for. For her, the worst disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).”If I ever suffered from ALS, I think I would seek medical help… That’s a tough question“, said the nurse quoted by Metro.co. This serious and debilitating degenerative disease often causes rapid death, within 3 to 5 years after diagnosis.
Then she mentions glioblastoma. This brain cancer is most common in adults and is caused by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the central nervous system. “Glioblastomas are quite tough – they are brain tumors. This usually happens to young people, and it’s difficult because it’s your brain, and your brain does a lot of things in how your body functions. When there are tumors at this level, it ruins a lot of things“, assures Julie McFadden.
“The ending is quite nice”
Conversely, she believes that kidney disease is a way “easier” to die. “End-stage renal failure is a rather benign disease. You kind of have a long-standing chronic illness, so that’s not good. You have to be on dialysis three days a week for 10 years, so it’s a long road and it can be difficult. But the ending is pretty cool. You just stop dialysis, go to sleep, and die within seven days.”
