Low prices make Turkish pomegranate season difficult

Despite good volumes and good quality, the pomegranate market is rather difficult for Turkish exporters, according to Yigit Gokyigit of Turkish fresh produce exporter Alanar: “The pomegranate season started in Turkey almost two months We have also received good demand for our pomegranates. In fact, the market is very difficult this year in terms of prices. The inflation rate is high in the country compared to previous decades. considerable increase in our costs. On the other hand, the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Turkish lira increases less quickly than inflation. Therefore, our profit margin has fallen to a very low level at present. “.

Yigit Gokyigit cannot complain about the demand for Turkish pomegranates, but price expectations are difficult to meet. The current demand is satisfactory for us. Our trading partners around the world like Germany, UK, Asia Pacific and even Canada would love to have Alanar pomegranates. However, in our main market, Europe, the pomegranate season has started with promotions. This has increased the expectations of our customers, who expect a lower price this season. As we are already struggling to control our increasing costs due to high inflation, it is much more difficult to support our customers with all these promotional prices.”

Overall, production has been steady and satisfactory this year, partly due to favorable weather conditions. “The volumes of pomegranates are really good this year. There are good quality Turkish pomegranates on the market. I would say that in terms of volume we are having one of the best seasons in the last two years. It can be attributed in part to the fact that the weather conditions did not have a negative effect on the pomegranates this season We had a good pre-harvest season in terms of climate, which resulted in good pomegranates. quality Surface defect rates and colors are better than in a normal year.

Cost and inflation challenges are significant, even though Turkish exporters have had a good season, underlines Yigit Gokyigit: “Turkey is one of the main producers of pomegranates in the world. Therefore, even if it there are many pomegranate producers and exporters, there is always room for all companies in the market As I already mentioned, the season is good this year in terms of volume and quality; , profitability is the most difficult topic for Turkish exporters this year I expect export prices to increase in the next two days, because I think the current prices are no longer manageable for exporters. who I suppose hope to finish the season with some profit.”

Our company name, “Alanar”, means “perfect” for “Ala” and “pomegranate” for “nar”. Alanar therefore means “Perfect Pomegranate”. As our name suggests, we have been providing the highest quality pomegranates and excellent service to our business partners for over ten years. I am very pleased to see continued growing demand from our existing customers, while expanding our opportunities into new markets. All of this proves that we are on the right track to delivering Alanar’s “perfect grenades.”
