France 3 explains the phenomenon of the cold drop, an essential parameter in the formation of storms, which will hit part of France and the Centre-Val de Loire region in the coming days.
Summer still hasn’t started, but it won’t be long before it’s here. But before that, the Centre-Val de Loire region will be hit by a stormy disturbance until Thursday June 20. Thunderstorms caused by the formation of a cold drop.
Olivier Renard, president of the Météo Center association, explains this phenomenon to us. “It is a zone of air mass at altitude which is colder than the temperatures on the ground. Thunderstorms are built during temperature differences of the order of 40 degrees. This is one of the important parameters for the creation of a storm”.
However, cold drops are far from being a new phenomenon. “It was already cold drops that brought us all this precipitation that we often had in the spring and at the start of the meteorological summer”indicates Olivier Renard.
These storms have arrived and will travel throughout the region in the coming days. “We already have stormy showers with good rain intensities in Touraine, Giennois, Montargois, Blésois, Vendômois and Eure-et-Loir. This phenomenon will tend to repeat itself until Thursday”continues the president of the Météo Center association.
A stormy burst will then arrive in the Loiret during the night of Monday June 17 to Tuesday June 18 which will continue into the early morning. “Intense electrical activity and lots of precipitation”, are to be expected. The hail should not be too intense. The following night could also be hectic.
As a reminder, in Orléans for example, current temperatures are 2.5 degrees lower than seasonal averages. The difference is even more striking with the month of June 2023 when the average temperature was 20.4°C compared to, for the first half of June 2024, 15°C.
Calmer weather should then appear on Friday June 14 for “at least a few days”. And then, summer should finally arrive in the region from next week.
