During the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, held in Sochi, the DRC affirmed its determination to deepen its ties with Russia, at the security, economic and diplomatic levels. The event, which brought together delegations from across the African continent, highlighted key areas of DRC-Russia cooperation, as well as the DRC’s priority expectations for a strengthened and strategic relationship.

Security priorities and diplomatic support

In her intervention, the Congolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, underlined the importance of a solid partnership with Russia in terms of security and defense, recalling the major security challenges facing the DRC in its eastern part. . “Russia plays a central role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. We are counting on its support to achieve a lasting solution to the security crisis that persists in the east of our country,” declared Ms. Kayikwamba during an interview on Russian television RT. The DRC has expressed its desire to see these already existing defense agreements come to full fruition, especially as the new Congolese government is now in place.

Commitment to inclusive multilateralism and reform of the Security Council

The DRC, candidate for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the period 2026-2027, took advantage of the conference to reiterate its vision of a strong multilateralism representative of contemporary realities. Ms. Kayikwamba said: “We want to represent Africa and defend its interests in the Security Council, advocating for a UN institution that reflects the aspirations of the people of the 21st century. » She expressed hope that Russia will support this candidacy and adhere to the idea of ​​reform of the Council.

Intensification of economic and infrastructure partnerships

In addition to security, the DRC seeks to diversify its economic partnerships with Russia, particularly in the areas of agriculture, energy and infrastructure. The minister stressed the need to create a favorable legal framework to encourage Russian investments in the DRC, allowing private actors to benefit from stable and secure bilateral relations. “We work together in defense and culture, but we know we can go much further. Agriculture, energy and infrastructure are promising sectors for our two countries,” added Kayikwamba.

Strengthening cultural and academic relations

In 2025, the two countries will celebrate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, as well as the anniversary of the Russian People’s Friendship University, founded in tribute to Patrice Lumumba. Ms. Kayikwamba said: “This will be a symbolic year for our two nations, and we hope to commemorate this friendship with events in Moscow and Kinshasa. »

Strengthened military cooperation and strategic commitments

The DRC stressed the need to develop reinforced military cooperation with Russia, recalling that several agreements in this area are already in place and being implemented. Ms. Kayikwamba clarified that the discussions also focused on defense, emphasizing the importance of rapid implementation of these agreements. “We are convinced that, now that the government team is in place, the implementation of the signed agreements will take place without delay. Our objective is clear: to translate these agreements into concrete actions for the security of our country,” she declared.

Prospects for cooperation at the Russia-Africa Forum

This event follows the 2023 Russia-Africa Summit, which established regular dialogue to strengthen relations between Russia and the African continent. Beyond security, the discussions in Sochi covered various subjects: energy transition, food security, digital security and cultural exchanges. “This Forum marks a new era for our relations with Russia and strengthens our position in a multipolar world. We are committed to building a lasting and beneficial partnership for our two nations,” concluded the Congolese minister.

With a busy schedule in 2025, particularly to commemorate this long-standing friendship, the DRC has confirmed its intention to work closely with Russia to further exploit the potential of their partnership and meet the strategic expectations of both countries.
