As every year on November 11, the President of the Republic commemorates the armistice and the end of the First World War. This year, he will be accompanied by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as part of a “traditional and special” day, according to the Élysée.
For more than 100 years, France has paid tribute to its dead from the 1914-18 war. Likewise, 2024 celebrates 120 years of the Entente Cordiale. Finally, 80 years ago, on November 11, 1944, Winston Churchill rekindled the flame of the Unknown Soldier with General de Gaulle.
On the program
The ceremony on November 11, 2024 will be accompanied by the French army choir playing the Marseillaise, preceded by the English anthem, “God Save The King” by the British fanfare The Band and the Bugles of the Rifles.
The day will be organized to start with a interview between Emmanuel Macron and the British Prime Minister at the Élysée. The two heads of state will head to the Georges Clemenceau statue on the Champs-Élysées, then to that of Winston Churchill. They will lay wreaths there before going to Place de l’Etoile for a traditional ceremony at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe.
President Macron will lay a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then rekindle the Flame and greet veterans and families of soldiers who died for France.
Will be present during the event Michel Barnier, Anne Hidalgo, Valérie Pécresse, Yaël Braun-Pivet and three ministers.
And in terms of transport?
The Paris police headquarters has installed a security perimeter in several streets of the 7th, 8th, 16th and 17th centuries. Restrictive measures will come into force, particularly on parking and traffic from this Sunday and Monday.
Some underground lines will also be impacted. Several metro stations and one RER will be closed on Monday. Six stations are concerned: Boissière (line 6), Champs-Élysées – Clemenceau (lines 1 and 13), Charles de Gaulle – Étoile (RER A, lines 1, 2 and 6), Franklin D. Roosevelt (lines 1 and 9), George V (line 1), Kléber (line 6).
Please also note that the Arc de Triomphe and Rond-point des Champs-Élysées sectors will be subject to controls. Two protection perimeters have been installed and will be active from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. A first therefore in the Arc de Triomphe sector and a second in the Rond-point des Champs-Élysées sector.
