For the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, 40 skippers will set off this Sunday from Sables-d’Olonne (Vendée) aboard their boats, which require a significant investment.
Participating in the Vendée Globe requires significant commitment. Both personal and financial.
For this 10e edition, 40 skippers will set off on the solo round-the-world sailing tour, non-stop and without assistance, this Sunday, November 10, in Les Sables d’Olonne (Vendée) aboard their Imoca (60-foot monohull), the only category participant in the race. And almost a third of them (13 sailors) are preparing to sail around the globe at the helm of a latest generation Imoca.
These boats represent a considerable cost, with an estimated price of between five and seven million euros for a new boat. The most expensive are those equipped with foils, which appeared for the first time in the Vendée Globe in 2016 and allow you to take off on the water. A pair of foils costs around 500,000 euros.
To finance this heavy investment, leasing is necessary over a period of several years. And skippers can count on the financial support of their sponsors and partners to carry out their project. Especially since they are faced with other costs, such as registration costs, which amount to 20,000 euros.
