Algerian-Russian relations will reach a new milestone in 2024, driven by a partnership dynamic that extends well beyond traditional sectors of cooperation. The official visit of Ahmed Attaf, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Sochi to participate in the Africa-Russia Partnership Forum, illustrates the desire of the two countries to maintain a sustained dialogue on international issues.
The energy sector is positioned as a central pillar of this strengthened collaboration. Cooperation between Sonatrach and Gazprom is taking shape through an ambitious project in the El Assel region. The initiative provides for the development of the Rhourde Sayeh and Rhourde Sayed North gas fields, including 24 boreholes and a processing unit dedicated to the production of dry gas, condensates and LPG. These installations, which are scheduled to be commissioned in 2025, will help consolidate Algeria’s status as a major player in global energy supply.
The signing of a Declaration of Deep Strategic Partnership between Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Vladimir Putin in Moscow marks the entry into a new phase of cooperation. Trade, which currently exceeds $3 billion, reflects a still untapped potential that the two countries intend to develop through targeted investment projects.
Technological innovation also occupies a prominent place in this bilateral partnership. An agreement signed between the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines and Rosatom opens the way to collaboration in the civil nuclear field. This technical rapprochement results in a 2024-2025 roadmap focused on the application of nuclear technologies in the health and pharmaceutical industry sectors.
The discussions between Ahmed Attaf and Sergei Lavrov also made it possible to address security challenges in the Middle East and the Sahel region, underlining the strategic importance of this partnership. The new Algerian legislation on investments, considered favorable by Moscow, suggests an expansion of cooperation towards new economic horizons.
This alliance, which now goes beyond the traditional framework of military and energy exchanges, reflects the maturity of a partnership adapted to contemporary requirements. The multiple agreements and memorandums of understanding signed constitute the basis of a relationship set to diversify further, meeting the development ambitions of the two nations.
