A fire broke out on Wednesday evening, around 11 p.m., in the Aiguelongue district of Montpellier. The fire started in a reception center for young children. 27 residents and 6 supervising adults were evacuated and brought to safety. They were relocated to another home in the Hérault Departmental Council.

The Montpellier firefighters intervened on rue des Tourterelles, in the middle of the night, Wednesday, for a fire in the technical room of a building.

The electrical fire spread to strollers and uncontrolled storage under a staircase in a children’s home called “La Pouponnière”.

It was extinguished by the personnel present using 4 fire extinguishers.

On site, emergency services treated 33 people who had smoke inhalation. Then reconnaissance took place and ventilation of the premises was carried out by the firefighters.

27 children aged 4 months to 7 years and 6 adults who had smoke inhalation were examined. After a health check, their condition did not require transport to the university hospital.

All adults and children were redirected to another reception structure in Clapiers.

The building was closed because the disaster will require repair work, in particular an overhaul of the fire safety system. The security commission will be contacted before the establishment reopens to the public.
