A violent storm hit Catalonia during the night from Thursday to Friday. The precipitation led to significant flooding this Friday, November 8 in the morning in Cadaqués, the town of Salvador Dali.

After the Valencia region hit by torrential rains, it is Catalonia and particularly the Costa Brava which were affected by bad weather in the early morning of Friday November 8. The town of Cadaqués, the easternmost city of mainland Spain, on the edge of the Cap de Creus natural park, was the victim of a major flood. Despite the triggering of an orange alert on Thursday afternoon by the city authorities, the rains, localized in the mountains surrounding Cadaqués, then flowed into the town. According to the authorities, the floods did not cause any casualties.

Cherished by the painter Salvador Dali who never ceased to defend it against the appetite of real estate developers, the city has awakened under the waters. The city canal, usually dry and used as a parking lot, became waterlogged at 1:30 a.m., according to city mayor Pia Serinyana: “It rained about 100 liters per square meter. There are three streams that come from the Paní mountain, although two did not carry much water, the three came together in the one that crosses the town”. According to the councilor, “a little more than a centimeter of water and mud” entered the souvenir and craft shops and the supermarket that line the street.

Further precipitation to be feared in the region

The waves then flowed down the Riera de Sant Vicenç towards the sea, passing like a torrent in front of the Amistat casino, the historic building of the town. Nothing resisted the power of the waters. Dozens of vehicles parked along the road were swept away and buried under the footbridge which borders the seafront.

This Friday noon, videos captured by residents show municipal workers at work. A large crane is busy removing the dozens of vehicles stuck under the bridge, in a pile of bodies and crumpled metal sheets. The majority of motorists affected are residents of Cadaqués or workers, but also a few tourists with rental cars, the town hall said.

Weather warnings for significant chances of rain are still in effect in the region for the evening. Further south, showers are expected in Girona, while civil protection has announced that it has maintained the emergency plan against flooding in the Alt and Baix Empordà areas.
