A major fire broke out yesterday evening around 6:30 p.m. at the ISDND (Non-Hazardous Waste Storage Facility) of the Colibri ecopole in Saint-Laurent du Maroni, affecting ” a circumscribed area of approximately 3000 m² at the start of discharge “. This area housed waste that had not yet been sorted, fueling an impressive fire.

Quickly on site, Mayor Sophie Charles immediately mobilized the municipal police to warn local residents and invite them to shelter in place, in order to protect themselves from potentially harmful fumes.

Fortunately, the fire was brought under control before spreading to the rest of the site.

According to initial hypotheses, the recent severe heat could have contributed to the outbreak of this incident.
