Marco Rodrigue, 57, of Saint-Zacharie, was found guilty of attempted murder of police officer Catherine Giroux late in the afternoon today.
The jury also found him guilty of possession of weapons with a purpose dangerous to the public peace.
During the day, the jury asked for details on the charge of attempted murder as well as the notion of intent to kill.
He had also expressed his interest in reviewing certain extracts from the interrogation of Marco Rodrigue. The judge replied that they had to listen to it again in its entirety.
By rendering a guilty verdict on the charge of attempted murder, the jury therefore rejected the theory of the defense lawyer, Mr. Samuel Cozak, according to which Marco Rodrigue had shot at police officer Giroux's patrol car to serve him a warning because he was “disgusted to be robbed.”
During his pleading, Mr. Cozak strongly insisted on the notion of intention to kill. It is on this and on the identification of the accused that the case rested.
Sentencing presentations will take place next Wednesday, November 13, starting at 9 a.m. at the Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce courthouse.
