On November 8, 2024, at 9:30 p.m., Bundesliga action continues at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in Berlin, as Union Berlin take on SC Freiburg in what promises to be an intriguing encounter on matchday 10 of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season.Where to watch:Setanta Sports

The opening match of the 10th day of the German championship pits two teams who had difficulties the previous season. Union Berlin narrowly escaped relegation, and both teams changed coaches during the off-season but got off to a good start this new campaign. Bo Svensson’s Union will welcome Julian Schuster’s Freiburg to their home field, and ahead of this clash, the teams are close in the Bundesliga standings, with Union just one point behind their opponents.

Union Berlin
Bo Svensson managed to lead the “Iron Ones” to a five-game unbeaten run to start his tenure, with a DFB-Pokal victory and two home league wins (against St. Pauli and Hoffenheim), as well as two away draws (against Mainz and RB Leipzig). However, on matchday five, the Union suffered their first defeat, conceding a last-minute goal against Borussia Mönchengladbach. A week later, they managed to bounce back with a 2-1 home win against Borussia Dortmund. After a two-week break, Union secured another victory, beating Holstein Kiel 2–0 away, but this was their only victory in recent matches. Then, they shared the points with Eintracht Frankfurt at home and then lost two consecutive away games: 0-2 at Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal and 0-3 against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

SC Freiburg
Julian Schuster got off to a good start in the Bundesliga with an emphatic 3-1 win over Stuttgart but quickly suffered his first defeat the following day, losing 0-2 to Bayern Munich in Munich. Subsequently, the “Breisgau-Brasilianer” managed another determined victory at home (2-1 against struggling Bochum) and surprised by winning 3-0 in Heidenheim. However, just a week later they faced a slight setback, losing 0-3 at home to lowly St. Pauli. Freiburg entered the international break on a high note after a win at Bremen, and after that they confidently handled Augsburg at home, winning 3-1. The following week the team suffered another defeat, losing 1–3 at Leipzig, and in their final match they were held to a 0–0 draw against Mainz at home. Between these setbacks in the Bundesliga, they still secured a victory in the DFB-Pokal against Hamburg (2-1), but the fans want the team to return to the path to success in the championship.

Union vs. Freiburg: Author’s prediction
In the previous season, Union closed their campaign with a home victory against Freiburg, winning 2-1. This season, under the leadership of Bo Svensson, the “Iron Ones” collected 10 points in four home games, recording three consecutive victories and one draw. Meanwhile, Freiburg have won two of their four away games this season, losing to the league leaders and triumphing against strong mid-table sides like Union. Importantly, Union have never lost to Freiburg at home, winning four and drawing three in their previous seven meetings in the capital. I think the “Iron Ones” will maintain their unbeaten record against Freiburg at home, with a win and a draw equally likely at 50-50.
