“Woodside has carried out the first extraction of oil from the Sangomar field, successfully completing the delivery of the country’s first offshore oil project,” the company said in a press release, relayed by media.

The deepwater field, located about 100 km south of Dakar, contains oil and gas. The project targets production of 100,000 barrels per day.

The Australian company Woodside operates the field with the Société des Pétroles du Sénégal (Petrosen).

This first extraction of Sangomar precedes the entry into production of another project, the Grand tortoise/Ahmeyim (GTA), located on the border with Mauritania, and developed by the British BP with the American Kosmos Energy, the Mauritanian Company Hydrocarbons (SMH) and Petrosen, and which is expected to produce around 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas LNG per year. Production could begin in the third quarter.

It should be noted that the floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO), a key component of the LNG development of phase 1 of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA), has already arrived at its final location, off the coast of maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal.

Phase 1 of the GTA project is expected to produce approximately 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per year, for more than 20 years. This is the first gas development in this new basin off the Senegalese-Mauritanian coasts.

Oil and gas production in Senegal will be intended for export and domestic consumption.
