“He couldn't feel his legs and his arms were paralyzed”: the body of the mountaineer who died after a historic climb has finally been recovered

Rescuers' operations to recover the remains were hampered for a long time by bad weather.

Nepalese rescuers recovered the body of theSlovak mountaineer Ondrej Huserkadied a week ago after climbing the summit of Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, we learned from a climb organizer. The 34-year-old climber, a member of the national mountaineering team, died on Thursday, November 3, when he fell into a crevasse, his Czech climbing partner Marek Holecek reported earlier. The two men had just succeeded the first ascent of Langtang Lirunge, which culminates at 7,234 m above sea level, from the east face.

“The team was dropped off on the mountain yesterday and they were able to identify the location of the fall”

Operations by Nepalese rescuers to recover his body have long been hampered by bad weather in the region. “The team was dropped off on the mountain yesterday and they were able to identify the location of the fall. They were able to recover his body today (…) and bring him back to Kathmandu”, Subin Thakuri, from the 14 Summits Expedition agency, reported to AFP. “I know it was very complicated and difficult. I am happy that everyone who participated in the recovery of Ondrej's body is safe and sound”rejoiced Marek Holecek on Facebook.

Hundreds of climbers flock to Nepal from all over the world every year in the fall to scale the peaks of the Himalayas. More than a thousand of them obtained a permit from the Nepalese authorities this season, including 11 for the ascent of Langtang Lirung.
