In the Niederkorn double murder trial, the 76-year-old defendant was sentenced this Thursday to 18 years in prison, eight of which were suspended. The sentence is lower than that requested by the prosecution, namely 20 years in prison.
For the record, the defendant had shot his two neighbors, a 62-year-old woman and her 54-year-old husband, in the middle of the street, using a hunting rifle, in rue des Trévires in Niederkorn, on October 17, 2022. Seven parties obtained moral damages of between 1,000 and 8,000 euros. And one of the seven civil parties should also be reimbursed for funeral fees amounting to 10,000 euros.
Contacted, Maître Lynn Frank, the accused’s lawyer, said he did not yet know whether his client would appeal (the expected time limit is 40 days). In the meantime, she considers the judgment “more than acceptable, in the sense that the mitigating circumstances were taken into account in the context of the neighborhood dispute, in particular article 71-1 (editor’s note: the person was affected, at least time of the facts, mental disorders having impaired his discernment or hindered the control of his actions)”.
