Francesco Bagnaia has won ten of MotoGP's 19 main races so far in 2024. However, due to the Sprint races, he is behind Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) by 24 points with one round remaining.
Even if only the main races counted, the Italian would lead by 24 points – but could still lose the championship. Loris Reggiani argues that there should be a bigger points gap.
In an interview with ZamTuve, the former pilot remarked that this kind of situation is not new: 'Someone who wins ten races shouldn't lose to someone who wins three. Marco Melandri, who won five races, should not have lost a championship to someone who won none [dans les 125cc en 1999]’.
Reggiani thinks the points gaps should be bigger: 'In my opinion there should be a bigger gap, especially in a season as long as this with over 20 races. In the future, they are expected to create three levels of difference. So, maybe Martín would have still won, but I don't like such a small percentage difference between first and second. What also seems strange and incorrect to me is that in Sprint races the percentage point gap between first and second is greater than in the main race, and I don't understand why’.
