On Sunday at Xbox’s Showcase, The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios revealed the trailer for Gears of War E-Day, a prequel to the popular third-person shooter that helped add a new layer to co-op play, horde modes, and character design .
Let’s look at the trailer, which will undoubtedly stir the hearts of fans who became attached to characters from the first five versions.
What New Features and Storylines Were Revealed in the E-Day Trailer?
We know E-Day is a prequel, considering we see Dom Santiago, who died dramatically in Gears of War 3. “Never thought it would end like this, huh Maria?”
Some have described it as the most dramatic video game death in history. Coalition’s inclusion in the trailer clearly aimed to elicit emotions.
Part of the campaign mode will challenge users to change history and bring back a fallen soldier or family member from the game’s past by rewriting history through older events. Pulling anything definitive from the trailer takes a lot of work from a gameplay perspective.
Marcus Fenix does hit one of the locusts with a television, which makes you wonder how big a part melee and environmental weapons play during combat. That’s an exciting concept.
How Are Fans Reacting to Trailer?
The reaction to the trailer has been almost entirely positive. It’s 2024, and virtually no one says nice things about anything being presented to be impressive. That said, there were some positive reactions from prominent content creators on YouTube.
The Easy Allies panel reacted to the trailer real-time and mostly figured out the title and themes while it ran initially. However, no one seemed to pick up on Dom’s inclusion or the significance.
Although the audience may not have initially recognized the Gears game, they were quick to identify the familiar strains of Tears for Fears’ Mad World. The arrangement of the music, reminiscent of Adam Lambert’s American Idol days, added to the sense of nostalgia.
The crowd at the Showcase cheered loudly once they realized the trailer was for a new Gears game. They also seemed to pick up on the fact that the trailer was for a prequel and Dom’s importance.

He is a hardcore fan of the series and immediately anticipated and fully appreciated Dom’s appearance in the trailer.
On X, where negative reviews are common, things were still mostly positive. I spent considerable time searching for such reviews, and it was a challenging endeavor.
While it’s true that some people weren’t impressed, the overwhelming response seems to put the new Gears in a good place. This strong positive response should instill confidence in potential buyers about the product’s popularity.
What Does This Trailer Mean for the Future of the Gears of War Franchise?
In what could be the next run for the Gears universe, we could move into an alternate universe approach. The trailer raises the standards for visuals and combat.
We also learned that the gameplay will be linear and not move toward an open-world approach. The developers face a daunting task-to preserve the core elements that have garnered a loyal following, while also catering to the expectations of a new generation of fans.
Because it’s a prequel and certain characters Marcus Fenix hadn’t met at the start of Emergence Day, we know at least two new partners should be introduced for the co-op game.
