Six dead in Russian strike on town of Zaporizhzhia

Six people were killed and 23 others injured in a Russian strike Tuesday morning on the town of Zaporizhia in southern Ukraine, according to a new report announced by the regional governor.

“Three people are in extremely serious condition”said Governor Ivan Fedorov on television. The shooting of « missile » reached a « site d’infrastructures »he added. “The fire which broke out on the scene was able to be extinguished”the governor clarified at midday.

The head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andriï Iermak, reacted on Telegram by calling on the West to do more to help Ukraine. “Zaporizhia. A new Russian attack, there are dead and wounded. The violence must be stopped with firm action. Allies must act more firmly”he insisted.

Shortly before the strike, an air alert due to a risk of ballistic missile attack had been triggered in the region which also houses the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, occupied by Russia since the start of its invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

Russian engineer sentenced to 16 years in prison

Russian engineer from strategic company accused of passing information to Ukraine “military and technical”was sentenced to 16 years in prison for “high treason” in the Urals, a local court said on Tuesday.

Danil Moukhametov, 32, an engineer at the Uralvagonzavod company, one of the largest tank manufacturers in the world, located in Nizhny Tagil, was arrested in 2023 by the Russian security services (FSB) with his wife Victoria, according to a statement from the Sverdlovsk Regional Court.

Accused of having “provided Ukrainian special services with military and technical information”Danil Moukhametov and “partially admitted his guilt”according to the court that sentenced him “16 years of imprisonment in a harsh prison camp”.

Victoria Moukhametova, who also worked at Uralvagonzavod, was sentenced in early October to 12 and a half years in prison for the same reasons, according to the state press agency RIA Novosti.

Putin promotes soldier's mother to governor

President Vladimir Putin has appointed the mother of a soldier killed in Ukraine as governor of a region in Russia's Far East, a day after the promotion to similar office of a man who participated in that country's ongoing conflict .

Vladimir Putin received Maria Kostiouk, a senior regional official and mother of a soldier who died on the front in Ukraine, in the Kremlin on Tuesday and appointed her head of Birobidzhan, on the Chinese border. “I want to thank you for raising a true Russian warrior, because Andrei died while fulfilling his military duty”declared Vladimir Putin, speaking of this woman's son, according to images broadcast by the presidency.

A decree confirming the appointment of Maria Kostiouk was published on the Kremlin website.
