On the night of August 20 to 21, 2024, around 2:00 a.m., several explosions followed by a major fire caused extensive damage in the Marcel Sant gallery, in the Pissevin district, in Nîmes in the Gard.
The newly built police office, whose inauguration was imminent, was then partly damaged by a fire that started from an adjoining business.
The investigation opened for damage by dangerous means in flagrante delicto, under the direction of the Nîmes public prosecutor's office, quickly made it possible to determine “that the disaster had been caused by a massive spillage of fuel via the chimney of a butcher's shop then under construction”, explains Cécile Gensac, the prosecutor, this Tuesday, November 5, in a press release.
Multiple investigations carried out over the last two months led this Tuesday, November 5, 2024 to the arrest and placement in police custody of six people from Nîmes: three adults aged 20 to 28, and three minors aged 15, 16 and 17 years old. They are all known for acts related to narcotics.
“The investigations must now make it possible to establish the potential role of each of those held in police custody and the conditions and motivations for taking action. HAS this stage, “nothing establishes with certainty a link between the destruction by fire and drug trafficking”, concludes the head of the Nîmes public prosecutor’s office.
