The outgoing Minister of Health, Firas Abiad, received this morning a plane carrying 20 tons of medical aid sent by Russia to Lebanon. The plane landed at the military base at Beirut International Airport, according to the official National Information Agency (ANI). The Russian Ambassador to Lebanon, Alexandre Rodakov, and the chairman of the parliamentary Health Committee, Bilal Abdallah (Progressive Socialist Party, PSP), were also present.
The minister stressed that this was not the first aid plane to arrive from Russia, but that it came at the right time, while Israeli bombings have “unfortunately targeted the health sector and hospitals such as as Baalbeck, Tibnin, Hiram and others. Firas Abiad also indicated that this issue was at the center of a meeting on Monday between outgoing Prime Minister Nagib Mikati and the Russian ambassador.
Alexander Rodakov, for his part, called on “the international community to push for an immediate ceasefire not only in Lebanon, but also in the Gaza Strip”.
The war between Hezbollah and Israel, which began with limited clashes on the border between South Lebanon and northern Israel on October 8, 2023, has intensified since last October, pushing more than a million Lebanese to flee the fighting, for a number of deaths which exceeded the 3,000 mark on Monday.
