Alban Lafont does not escape criticism after FC Nantes' defeat against OM on Sunday evening (1-2). His former coach Raymond Domenech was not kind to the Canaries goalkeeper on the L'Equipe channel.
Long considered a great hope for French football as a goalkeeper, Alban Lafont ultimately never passed the milestone hoped for by many specialists. The former captain of FC Nantes remains a good goalkeeper, capable of sublimating himself on certain evenings, but this was not the case on Sunday against Olympique de Marseille at La Beaujoire. Not really to blame on the goal scored by Neal Maupay at the half-hour mark, Alban Lafont is clearly more open to criticism on the second Olympian goal, which was the work of Mason Greenwood.
Certainly, the English international's shot is well placed and touches the post before entering the goal. But the shot is distant and not very powerful, and Alban Lafont clearly gives the impression of not pushing enough on his legs to extend enough to intervene. Which earned the Nantes goalkeeper strong criticism from his former coach Raymond Domenech on the air of the L’Equipe Channel.
“Lafont does not dive, he falls”
“Alban Lafont has always been like that, he doesn’t dive, he falls. He has no legs, he dives sideways. He's always been like that. If he has balls at height, yes, he will get them. But anything that's on the ground and on target, he's always in trouble. He has never had more explosiveness, I saw it when I was in Nantes. On balls that roll into the corners, it scores a goal every time” explained Raymond Domenech, without any pity with his former goalkeeper in the Evening Team when debriefing OM's victory on the Nantes pitch. Words which will undoubtedly annoy the Nantes goalkeeper, who almost left last summer, which would undoubtedly have led FC Nantes to recruit Anthony Lopes. Ultimately, this was not the case despite multiple rumors and for Lafont, the objective now is to contribute to maintaining the Canaries before a potential departure next June.
