In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, took control of the town of Kamandi Gîte, in North Kivu, this Sunday.
After a surprise attack against the Wazalendo militia allied with the Congolese army, the well-equipped M23 fighters quickly seized this town of 35,000 inhabitants, causing population displacements.
Further fighting was reported in surrounding areas, including in Masisi and Kamandi Port.
At the same time, some diplomatic progress was made in the Luanda peace process, where Congolese and Rwandan experts, supervised by Angolan mediation, agreed on a plan for military disengagement and neutralization of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). ). An agreement validated by experts, but still requiring the approval of the foreign ministers of the two countries during a session scheduled for November 16.
A reinforced verification mechanism, led by Angola, with liaison officers from the DRC and Rwanda, will be officially launched on November 5 in Goma to monitor the borders of the two countries.
