Discontent with Washington

Washington, for its part, denounces the conviction in Russia of a former employee of the American consulate. Saturday November 2, Robert Shonov was sentenced to almost five years in prison in Russia. The United States has “firmly” condemned this verdict. “His conviction on unfounded allegations constitutes a scandalous injustice”said Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, in a statement.

Robert Shonov was arrested in 2023, because he was suspected by Moscow of having transmitted secret information on the conflict in Ukraine to the United States, in exchange for money. According to the judgment published on the website of the court of the Primorye region, 400,000 rubles (4,000 euros) and an electronic device linked to the commission of the facts had been seized.
