The Turkish fruit season is in full swing: pomegranates, quinces and sultanas currently dominate the offering, while the citrus season is also gearing up. “The pomegranate season got off to a particularly good start this year, with brightly colored fruits and encouraging export volumes. We have good availability for calibers 7.9 and 12, which are particularly popular. Prices are approximately the same level as last year,” reports Enes Cakmak, director of Fresh Maximum GmbH, headquartered at the Stuttgart wholesale market.
Turkish pomegranates
Since the beginning of October, Cakmak has also been engaged in the import and distribution of Turkish quince. Although this fruit is still seen as a niche product in Germany, it has experienced great growth in recent years. “The timing of quince is similar to that of pomegranate. It is mainly grown in Denizli, Isparta and Antalya regions, and its availability usually extends until March/April of the following year. For our part, quince has shown promising stability over the years. »
Record prices for sultana grapes, threat of rain in the Spanish persimmon campaign
Furthermore, tons of sultana grapes from Türkiye continue to arrive. “We have had a successful campaign so far, with prices reaching record levels,” says Cakmak. Currently, prices fluctuate between €17 and €19 for 5 kg, compared to €10 to €12 last year. This increase is partly explained by persistent inflation, high transport costs and rising producer prices. In addition to Turkish goods, Fresh Maximum GmbH also offers table grapes of Italian origin, the season of which is coming to an end. “The last main varieties, such as Regina, were delivered as early as week 43, which is relatively early. However, we will also be able to offer refrigerated products, in particular the Autumn Crisp and Italia varieties, until December. »

Persimmons are also traditionally a strong product in fall, adds Cakmak. “We have had good sales so far, although large fruit is relatively rare. The recent rainfall in the Valencia region is concerning, but so far we have not experienced any supply problems. We hope this will continue. »

Turkish citrus season in the starting blocks
Finally, the Stuttgart company is preparing for the upcoming arrival of the Turkish citrus season. Cakmak says: “We are expecting the first shipments of Turkish oranges (Washington Navel) and Nadorcott clementines by mid-November, followed by the first grapefruits approximately two weeks later. The first indicators in terms of quantity and quality are promising. As South African Nadorcott clementines are now sold out, we are primarily offering Spanish Oronule clementines to our customers. Demand for these has been good recently, while better quality clementines are starting to hit the market. »
