Sciences Po Strasbourg Cuts Ties With Israel: The UEJF Prepares Its Judicial Response

Sciences Po finds itself in turmoil after its decision to suspend its partnership with Reichman University in Israel. The Union of Jewish Students of (UEJF) is counterattacking and considering legal action against this measure adopted by the board of directors on June 25, 2024.

This suspension, described as “discriminatory” by the UEJF, has given rise to strong protests. Its president, Yossef Murciano, denounces a decision which “risks fueling an already tense climate” in a context marked by the increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Strasbourg. The organization particularly recalls the physical attacks suffered by three Jewish students last year at the University of Strasbourg.

The UEJF, represented by Maître Sacha Ghozlan, points out the harmful consequences of this measure: disruption of intellectual exchanges between French and Israeli students, marginalization of Israeli academics working for peace, and attack on the fundamental principles of higher education.

This decision comes in an establishment already marked by its past. Sciences Po Strasbourg hit the headlines a few years ago during a serious anti-Semitic incident, where students made death threats against Israel and the Jewish community. Faced with what could create a “dangerous precedent”, the UEJF is preparing its legal response, determined to defend what it considers to be the essential values of the university: dialogue, diversity of opinion and international cooperation.
