BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) — China sincerely hopes that the Ukraine Peace Summit will not become a platform leading to inter-bloc confrontation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Monday. .

Mao made the remarks during a regular press briefing in response to a media question. The Chinese side openly declared last week that it would not participate in the Ukraine Peace Summit hosted by Switzerland. Some believe that not attending the summit means that China does not support Switzerland and Ukraine in holding the summit, does not support peace and stands with Russia against Ukraine.

Mao said China believes that all efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis should be supported.

“We have attached great importance to the Ukraine Peace Summit, hosted by Switzerland from the very beginning, while maintaining close communication with Switzerland, Ukraine and other relevant parties,” she said. added.

China has repeatedly stressed that the international peace conference requires meeting three important elements, namely recognition of both Russia and Ukraine, equal participation of all parties , and a fair discussion of all peace plans, Mao said, adding that as far as China is concerned, the conference does not yet seem to satisfy these three elements and that is why China would not participate.

She stressed that China’s position on the peace conference was fair and just.

“Our position is not aimed at any party, and certainly not at this particular summit. China’s decision not to attend is simply based on our assessment of the conference itself, and we believe that relevant parties can understand our position “, she noted.

Whether one supports peace or not should not be judged by a particular country or on the basis of a particular conference, Mao said, adding that not attending the conference does not mean one does not support not peace, and for some countries, even if they participated, they would not necessarily want to see the end of the conflict wholeheartedly.

According to Ms. Mao, what is important is to see the actions that are taken, and what happened proves that China is most firmly and actively engaged in promoting peace talks.

Mao said China has never stood idly by, fanned the flames, let alone profited from the conflict.

“In addition, we have worked tirelessly for a ceasefire, which has been highly welcomed by several parties, including Russia and Ukraine,” the spokesperson added.
