For thirty years, every June 9, those close to Karine Leroy, first and foremost her mother and her twin sister, have thought about her all day. On June 9, 1994, Karine, 19 years old, disappeared on the way to high school in a town in Seine-et-Marne.
“When I see my mother at the window again, saying to me, ‘Karine, your big sister, hasn’t come home,’ I said to myself: ‘Something happened to her, she died’. Running away was sure that it wasn’t possible,” says Marine, one of Karine Leroy’s sisters and guest of The time of the crime.
His body was found a month later on the edge of a forest. A silhouette so tortured that her mother will not be allowed to see her. The investigation will then endeavor to find this murderer who deliberately acted in a sadistic manner.
The assumptions of a sex maniac, a frustrated boyfriend or evena serial killer will be reviewed. Because of the modus operandi, the name of François Vérove, alias “le Grêlé”, unmasked and committed suicide in 2021, is today the subject of intense speculation and continuous verification.
An identical operating procedure
Investigators insist that the procedure for killing Karine – the “Spanish garrote” – is identical to that practiced by “le Grêlé”, notably during a sadistic double murder in Paris, in the Marais, in May 1987.
“At the time, we were also in the Grêlé case and we saw correspondence on operating methods. (…) We were not alone since there was a famous investigator, who followed the Grêlé files, had himself requested Karine Leroy’s file and came to the same conclusions as us”, explains Me Corinne Herrmann , lawyer for the family of Karine Leroy and guest of The time of the crime.
The cold case unit is considering, in addition to Grêlé, another suspect in this case. “There is another suspect who committed acts in the region. We are in the process of retracing his journey. So, we have concrete elements on which we can work which are new elements,” explains Corinne Herrmann.
“We feel thatwe are close to the goal. I feel that we are not going to wait thirty years to have a little more in-depth answers, but it is time,” said Marine, Karine Leroy’s sister.
