The Pacific Islands Forum mission began on Sunday October 27. Initial interviews took place with the elected representatives of the customary Senate and with the President of the Congress, Veylma Falaeo. She returns to this meeting at the microphone of NC la 1ère. Discussions are planned with caregivers and stakeholders from the economic world this Monday, October 28.

Upon their arrival in New Caledonia, the ministers of Tonga, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and the Cook Islands went on Sunday to the Médipôle then to the former Kenu-In commercial zone in Dumbéa, in order to observe the extent of damage. The delegation of heads of government from the Pacific Islands Forum was then received at the high commission for a meeting with Louis le Franc, the high commissioner and ambassador of for the Pacific, Véronique Roger-Lacan.

Following these discussions, the Pacific leaders went to the customary Senate, where after the traditional custom of welcome, they spoke behind closed doors with the senators for about an hour. Eloi Gowe, president of the Customary Senate, took this opportunity to recall the role of the State in the crisis facing the country. A new negotiation system must, according to him, be put in place with the more assertive presidency of the customary Senate alongside the independence parties. In the meantime, the senators appeal to the international community for support and expertise for economic recovery as well as the reconstruction of the territory.

The last stop of this first day of official visit was at the Congress for a one-hour meeting with the ministers of Tonga, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and the Cook Islands and the president of the institution Veylma Falaeo.

She returns to this meeting, at the microphone of NC la 1ère, this Monday, October 28. The political and financial subjects of New Caledonia were discussed. “The ministers have been very attentive, in particular to everything that has happened since May 13 and the management of the crisis. They reiterated that they are not there to tell us what we must do but to see how they can support us.

Today, Pacific leaders are continuing discussions with members of the government and the presidents of the South and Islands provinces. Discussions with economic players and caregivers will follow during the day. A lunch with young people is also on the program. This fact-finding mission will end on Tuesday October 29 but the conclusions are expected in several months.
