A Libyan suspected of planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in Germany was arrested on Saturday near Berlin, a spokesperson for the German federal prosecutor’s office told Agence France-Presse. The suspect is suspected of “support a terrorist group abroad”according to the same source which specified that it was the Islamic State.
A major police operation, involving special forces, took place in the evening in the town of Bernau, neighboring Berlin, where the suspect was arrested, reports the tabloid Bild. The individual’s home, located in this city, was searched, the prosecution said. According to Bildthe man is 28 years old and the German authorities were alerted thanks to information from foreign intelligence services.
Israeli Ambassador to Berlin Ron Prosor thanked German authorities “to ensure the security of our embassy”in a message on the X platform.
Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the German authorities have increased their vigilance in the face of the Islamist threat and the resurgence of anti-Semitism, like many countries around the world. In early September, Munich police shot dead a young Austrian known for his links to radical Islam as he prepared to carry out an attack on the Israeli consulate general.
