A man kills his pregnant ex-partner by hitting her in a car: what we know about the tragedy that occurred in Mulhouse

A 33-year-old woman, deliberately hit by her ex-partner, Friday May 17 in Riedisheim (Haut-Rhin), died from her injuries in hospital the next day, the Mulhouse public prosecutor said, Edwige Roux-Morizot, during a press conference this Tuesday. The victim was pregnant at the time of the tragedy.

Already convicted of violence, the man was indicted for “murder of a spouse” and “voluntary violence” and placed in pre-trial detention, added the prosecution.

What happened ?

Friday evening, this 33-year-old woman, mother of one child, was first deliberately hit by her former partner. According to witnesses, she left the vehicle. Her ex-partner then reversed course “before rushing at him” and fleeing, said the Mulhouse prosecutor.

Seriously injured and suffering in particular from significant head trauma, the young woman was taken care of by emergency services, contacted by witnesses. She was first transported to the Émile Muller hospital in Mulhouse, before being airlifted in absolute emergency to the CHRU in Strasbourg, a police Source told AFP.

Sadly, the victim died from his injuries in hospital the next day. She was pregnant at the time of the tragedy. The child “she was carrying did not survive,” said Edwige Roux-Morizot.

The man was known to the courts

The suspect had already been convicted twice for domestic violence against the victim, the prosecutor said. In October 2022, he was sentenced to 10 months of probation for violence against the thirty-year-old.

On April 8, he was again sentenced in immediate appearance for similar facts to 18 months in prison, 10 of which were suspended on probation for two years with a ban on appearing at the home of his ex-partner and a ban on contact with her, said Edwige Roux-Morizot.

The eight months were to be held in home detention under electronic surveillance but “the accused (…) had joined his family in the North, and was domiciled within the jurisdiction of the sentence enforcement judge (JAP) of Arras,” according to the prosecutor.

The ex-companion nevertheless “returned on (Friday) May 17” to Mulhouse “with the agreement of his ex-partner” to “discuss the situation of their 22-month-old daughter”, under judicial placement, he said. she continued. She was also the mother of a 7-year-old child from another relationship.

That day, a first argument broke out in a parking lot in Mulhouse, where the man pushed and caused the thirty-year-old to fall. Witnesses alerted the police but the man fled. Transported to hospital, the former companion quickly left the establishment. “We don’t know if it was she who contacted her ex-partner, or if he was waiting for her” but “she found herself” in “the latter’s car” where another argument broke out in Riedisheim , followed by the tragedy which led to the death of the young woman, indicated the magistrate.

Where is the investigation?

Arrested shortly after the events, his former companion, aged 44, was placed in police custody. When he was arrested, the man, who was intoxicated, had a blood alcohol level of 0.69 mg per liter of exhaled air, a police Source told AFP.

A blatant investigation was opened, initially, for “attempted intentional homicide” by the Mulhouse public prosecutor’s office on Friday evening, entrusted to the city police station.

Sunday May 19, the day after the death of his ex-partner, the man was indicted for “intentional homicide of a spouse” and placed in pre-trial detention, the Mulhouse prosecutor’s office said.
