European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said she was “very confident” about controlling inflation in the euro zone, as the impact of the energy crisis and supply chain bottlenecks supply fades, during an interview broadcast Tuesday.

The ECB virtually promised an interest rate cut on June 6, and so policymakers began debating how interest rates would move afterward.

“I am really convinced that we have inflation under control,” Lagarde said in an interview broadcast by Irish television channel RTE.

“The forecasts that we have for next year and the year after are really very, very close to the target, if not to the target. So I am convinced that we have moved to a control phase ” she said, according to an RTE transcript.

Ms. Lagarde also said that Europe must prepare for the possible re-election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, because “this will have consequences for Europe […] whether through tariffs or other means.” (Writing: Conor Humphries; Editing: Alison Williams)
