During a telephone interview, the American president congratulated Mr. Netanyahu on the death of the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement, according to a press release. The two leaders also considered that it was “an opportunity to promote the release of the hostages” and that they would “cooperate to achieve this objective”.

Yahya Sinouar, long a man in the shadows before taking the head of Hamas this summer, is considered one of the architects of the unprecedented attack of the Palestinian Islamist movement on Israel on October 7, 2023, which plunged the region into a bloody conflict.

The Israeli army announced Thursday that it had killed him during an operation in the Gaza Strip.

Joe Biden welcomed the death of Yahya Sinouar, speaking of a “good day for Israel, the United States and the world” which offers the “opportunity for a political settlement” in the Gaza Strip.

“It is now possible to envisage a ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power, as well as a political settlement offering a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike,” Joe Biden said in a statement. “Yahya Sinouar was an insurmountable obstacle to the achievement of all these objectives. This obstacle no longer exists.”
